Writing at Witton

Here at Witton Middle School we understand the importance of writing. In each year group, children can expect to develop their skills in the following areas:

  • spelling rules
  • grammatical accuracy
  • composition of written pieces
  • identification of most relevant information to match purpose and organisation
  • use of punctuation to guide the reader and to create effects
  • use of editing and redrafting

Children will do this in a range of different types of writing, both within English lessons and across the curriculum. These will include:

  • fiction
  • non fiction
  • poetry

In order to support the children in their writing development, teachers use the following strategies:

  • discussion – paired and class
  • shared writing
  • guided writing
  • use of individual targets based on assessment
  • marking and feedback
  • assessment during lessons
